Technical analysis of LZMA algorithms and why you should abandon classic .ZIP.

The ZIP format dates back to 1989. While universal, it is far from efficient for modern data volumes. The 7z format (7-Zip) is a much more powerful open-source alternative. **The LZMA Algorithm**: This is the heart of 7z. It offers a compression ratio often 30 to 50% higher than ZIP. To archive 1 GB of documents, you will often get a 400 MB 7z file compared to 700 MB in ZIP. **Enhanced Security**: 7z allows encrypting not only file content but also the file names themselves within the archive. No one can see what's inside without the password. **Solid Compression**: Unlike ZIP which compresses each file individually, 7z can treat the archive as a single 'solid' block, which considerably improves the compression of similar files (like successive versions of the same document). **Simplified Conversion**: Use PulsConv to migrate your old ZIPs to modern 7z archives and free up space on your servers.
